  • Consider a qualified co-borrower
  • Look at credit unions
  • Build recent on-time history
  • Keep other debts in check
Straight Answer

You may be able to refinance a car loan with bad credit, especially if your credit has improved since you got the loan or you've built a record of on-time payments. Offers may be limited, so shop with soft-pull prequalification, consider credit unions and a qualified co-borrower, and compare total cost. Approval isn't guaranteed and depends on the lender.

Realistic expectations with fair or poor credit

Here's the honest picture. With fair or poor credit, fewer lenders will compete for your loan, and offers may not be dramatically better than what you have. The biggest opportunities usually come when something has changed since you got your loan: your scores went up, old late payments aged, a collection was resolved or corrected, or you've built a solid year of on-time payments.

If your credit today looks about the same as it did at signing, a refinance may not move the needle much. That's not a failure; it just means the better move may be to improve your profile first and check again later. Our refinance after credit repair page explains why timing matters.

Where to look for bad credit refinance options

  • Online refinance platforms. Some platforms work with a range of credit profiles and let you prequalify with a soft pull. RefiJet is one option we work with.
  • Marketplaces. A marketplace can show offers from several lenders at once. Compare through the SuperMoney refinance marketplace.
  • Credit unions. Many Central Texas credit unions offer auto refinancing and may be more flexible with members. Membership requirements vary.
  • Your current lender. Rarely the best offer, but occasionally worth asking about hardship options or modifications if refinancing isn't possible.

Adding a co-borrower: helpful, but serious

A co-borrower with stronger credit and steady income can improve your chances or the offers you see. But be clear-eyed about what it means for them:

  • They're equally responsible for the full debt.
  • Late payments hurt their credit too.
  • The loan counts against their debt load when they apply for credit.
  • Getting them off later usually means another refinance.

If someone co-signed your current loan and you want to release them, that's a different goal. You'd need to qualify on your own. See when to refinance for more.

Shop smart with soft pulls

When credit is tight, you don't want a string of hard inquiries from applications that go nowhere. Start with soft-pull prequalification, which doesn't affect your credit score, to see whether options exist. A hard inquiry generally comes only when you choose to move forward with a lender. Scoring models may also treat several auto loan inquiries in a short window as a single inquiry. Details are on our soft-pull auto refinance page.

Be wary of anyone promising "guaranteed approval" or "no credit check" refinancing. Legitimate lenders review your credit. A soft pull is still a credit check; it just doesn't affect your score.

Ways to improve your odds before you apply

  1. Pull your reports. Check all three at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute anything inaccurate. You can do this yourself for free.
  2. Stay current. Recent on-time payments on your auto loan and other accounts matter a lot.
  3. Pay down card balances. Lower utilization may help your profile.
  4. Pay down the auto balance if you're upside down. Better loan-to-value can open more options.
  5. Avoid new credit. Skip new cards and loans in the months before you refinance.
  6. Have your documents ready. See the refinance checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What credit score do I need to refinance a car loan?

There's no single minimum. Each lender sets its own standards, and they look at more than your score, including payment history, loan-to-value, income, and the vehicle.

Can I refinance if I've had a late payment?

Possibly, especially if it was a while ago and your recent payments are on time. Recent late payments on the auto loan itself make refinancing harder.

Are buy-here-pay-here loans refinanceable?

Sometimes. Some buy-here-pay-here dealers don't report to all bureaus, and their titles and contracts can be less standard, so check with the new lender. Building a record of on-time payments first may help.

Will a co-signer guarantee approval?

No. A qualified co-borrower may improve your odds, but approval is always up to the lender.

Should I fix my credit before refinancing?

If your credit hasn't changed since you got the loan, improving it first may lead to better options later. Remember that no one can legally remove accurate, timely information from your report.

Can Elite Auto Funding help if I've been turned down?

Yes. We can help you understand why and build a plan. See our denied auto financing guide.
